Oh. My. Goodness. Period dramas rule my life now. Of course I indulge myself in watching “Pride and Prejudice” and numerous episodes of “Downton Abbey,” but this has gotten a little too far. I was scanning the merchandise on Netflix and I saw an intriguing mini series called “North and South.” One of the things that caught my eye, was that Richard Armitage played one of the main characters in the mini series and I immediately knew I had to check it out. For those of you that don’t know who he is, Richard Armitage plays Thorin Oakenshield in “The Hobbit” series.
“North and South” is a four part mini series and every episode is only an hour long. I finished it so quick, I was going through withdrawals. The characters, the story, the scenery… everything was beautiful. It is set around the middle of the nineteenth century, near the beginning of the industrial revolution The story starts out with a woman named Margaret Hale who moves with her mother and father from the rural south of England to the industrial north. Margaret Hale meets a master of a cotton mill, named John Thornton. The series is about John and Margaret and their relationship together and the people in their lives. Every episode is enthralling and breathtaking.
I would encourage anyone and everyone to watch it. It’s such an interesting look in England’s history with a bit of intense drama thrown in. I would definitely go back and watch it again, but I would also read the book.
