Characters from movies, books, television, and so on, tend to entertain us on a regular basis. Either it’s something to take your mind off of reality for thirty minutes or you start to invest yourself into their lives. I have read many books and seen many movies and television shows and I have come across characters that made me smile and characters that have wrenched my heart and crushed it into a thousand pieces. I want to get into talking about some of my favorite characters from pop culture and the first character I want to start with is Blair Waldorf.
Who is Blair Waldorf? If you have seen “Gossip Girl,” you know exactly who she is. She is a socialite Princess (or ex-Princess), who takes the Upper East Side by storm with her classic fashion sense and witty repertoire. She is the ultimate Diva and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She doesn’t change herself for anyone and knows that she doesn’t need a man to make her happy. To me, Blair Waldorf is a role model, even if she has had her unspeakable downs. She graces New York City with her head held high and the latest Mark Cross satchel by her side.
Blair Waldorf is first introduced to us as a snobby, privileged girl with a vendetta against her ex-best friend. As the season progresses, you find out that she does not have the ideal life. Her mother and father end up having a divorce, only to find out her father is gay and has a partner already. This huge change in her life really affects her and you start to see the repercussions of it. You find out she’s Bulimic and her BFF (Former Ex-BFF), Serena, finds out and helps her get the help she needs.
Throughout the seasons, you see her kind spirit when she helps the love of her life, Chuck Bass, from his downward spiral after he lost his father. She extends her kind spirit to her BFF, Serena Van Der Woodsen, when she is plagued with boy trouble and family disarray. Blair stands by her friends and if someone tries to mess with her or her friends, there will be hell to pay. “Haven’t you heard? I’m the crazy bitch around here,” Blair Waldorf replies as one of her past enemies tries to ruin her BFF’s reputation. This is right before she sends her past enemy off the island of Manhattan and with her enemy’s parents (where they send her to a church camp for the next year). Blair will not be afraid to destroy you and everything you accomplished if you cross her or her loved ones.
The one thing that I love about Blair the most, is the way that she looks at being in a relationship. She doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve, but rather waits for the man to go through the maze to her heart. The one time she did wear her heart on her sleeve was for a Prince and that did not turn out well. There is something that Blair says to her BFF when confronted about boys and it is, “I’m not a stop along the way. I’m a destination.” This is one of my all time favorite quotes, because she’s saying that she doesn’t want to be labeled as some girl that a guy dated back in high school or that one girl that some guy hooked up with, she wants to be THE girl that the boy wants.
Blair is definitely a force to reckon with and puts her foot down for what she believes in. “Destiny is for losers. It’s just a stupid excuse to wait for things to happen instead of making them happen.” And Blair proves that with every move and choice that she makes. If something will not happen for her, she makes them happen. This is something that many of us can learn from and should learn from. She often refers herself to a modern day Audrey Hepburn and that is one hundred percent believable. She’s a classic beauty that embodies old Hollywood charm and exudes (atleast she tries to) ladylike behavior. Though if you are wearing last season’s fashions, she will not be afraid to let you know with some witty remark.
Blair Waldorf is a force of nature and she will let you know it. This and everything I have shared with you is why I believe she is one of my all-time favorite characters. There are many quotes by Blair Waldorf that I could leave you with, but this one (of course) takes the cake, “Have a little faith, and if that doesn’t work, have a lot of mimosas.”
